I am Juan David Gutiérrez and ZigZag Translations is my personal brand. It is the combination of my lifelong love for languages and the copywriting skills and cultural sensitivity I have acquired over the years.
AND IT IS ZIGZAG BECAUSE TRANSLATION REALLY ISN’T A STRAIGHT LINE. TO GO FROM A TO B SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH X, Y AND Z FIRST, WHICH REQUIRES LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE TO NAVIGATE CULTURAL BARRIERS AND TRANSLATE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS INSTEAD OF JUST TEXTS AND WORDS.
What I do
Working either alone or in collaboration with a handful of trusted translators and copyeditors (including my wife, Catherine, who is also an MA qualified Spanish-English translator), I provide a range of linguistic services including translation, copyediting, transcreation, localisation, and proofreading, ensuring all texts are delivered to a native level standard and fully adapted for the target audience.
Who I am
I am an MA qualified translator, working from English and French into Latin American Spanish, with extensive experience in the transcreation and localisation of eCommerce and web copy, as well as marketing and advertising campaigns for international brands. I have strong copywriting, client relations and project management skills and I am always on the lookout for new opportunities that will give me the chance to broaden my expertise and develop my passion for languages from a creative point of view.
I specialise in the transcreation of commercial copy for international brands with a strong presence in the Latin American markets, collaborating with agencies and organisations such as OLIVER, Creative Translation and Kantar Media, and doing work for many different clients from diverse areas and sectors such as:

Translation and proofreading of eCom copy, visual merchandising manuals and training materials, as well as adaptation of brand campaigns for a range of sports and product launches.
Translation of eCom copy and transcreation of product headlines and banners.

Copyediting of training materials discussing spirit-making processes for brands such as Chivas Reagal, Absolut Vodka and The Glenlivet, as well as wine and champagne tasting information.
Translation and proofreading of product information labels for the Robinsons Fruit Shoot brand.

Translation of press releases, highlights documents and reports for this Geneva-based NGO, the leading source of data and analysis on internal displacement.

Transcreation of video scripts for advertising campaigns to be used in social media, Internet and TV, and acting as Language Director during the VO recording of some of the client’s digital ads.
Translation and proofreading of Twitter and LinkedIn posts, web content and quarterly reports for this global provider of financial technology services and collaboration solutions.
Media evaluation of press coverage from French sources that mention HSBC and data coding in English to be used in media intelligence reports for the client.
